A Fun Marketing Idea
I am fortunate to work with some great guys at Sage and many of them have unique hobbies and past times. Sage is great about encouraging employees to share their hobbies and interests with each other. In fact our walls are decorated with frames that highlight our employees interests. Each employee once on board for a year can bring in personal effects, pictures, awards, etc. Those items are then professionally framed in a shadow box and hung on the walls all over our building.
One of these unique employees is our Retention Manager Cory Jones. Cory was a competitive power lifter who won quite a few state level competitions and then recently this year decided to go into “strong man competitions”. He is now on a quest to become known as the strongest man in Texas in fact in his first year he won the title at the novice division.
So one day we were tying to talk Cory into having a few drinks after work but he was trying to wiggle out. Being the negotiator I told him I could get him a top ten rank in Google for the term, “the strongest man in texas” if he joined us and that got him to go.
Now this all started as a fun little thing between some friends but by that evening our marketing minds had put together a plan to use this to gain some link popularity in a sort of different way.
So what I have done so far is set up a very basic page called of course, the strongest man in Texas and set up a Texas Strong Man Blog for Cory to post tips to. I used blogger because it is simple to use for a person who never blogged before in fact with the email setting Cory just emails his weekly post to his secret blogger email address and the rest is automated.
Then with a little rss I fed his tips onto his page. We are still working on the copy and we are going to add a more civilian type of picture in the area that says “Who is Cory Really?” talking a bit about his business side. Then we are also going to tie in a bit of a hokey link to one of our Marketing Characters, “The Savings Super Hero”. To the effect of “is Cory the man in the suit” or something like that.
In the end it will be a cool little page and as there are only 8 exact matches for the phrase ranking it will be easy. Now it won’t get a ton of search traffic because the term is not very searched but Cory can then tell all his friends to just “google strongest man in texas” and they will find him. We will encourage friends and family to email the page and link to it.
Will it make the top of delicious or digg? No of course not but think about it, our bud Cory will be marketing his cool page by word of mouth for a long time. So what could 20-30 such pages about individuals do for a sizable company?
This is just a fun little way to find another source of links and get involvement by others into your Internet marketing efforts.
