A link a day keeps poor rankings away

There is an old saying, "an apple a day, keeps the doctor away". Of course that does not mean that apples keep you healthy in and of themselves. In that saying an apple is a metaphor for all food that is good for you and the saying means that if you eat food that is good for you then you will enjoy health in your life.
In my new saying, (that I hope will catch on) I mean it the same way. Sure a link would be nice to get today but if not a link then how about adding a new page of content to your site, or making one post to your blog? For professional internet marketers it goes with out saying, we have many sites to maintain, it is our full time job to do something to each of them all the time.
Many of us even have several dozen or more we personally own and we have to keep them growing and developing too. Yet almost every day I talk to someone that wants advice on their website and my advice is just get a link a day. Now these are not the links that just show up, but the ones you go out and get or create for yourself. They are that article you publish or content you write for another persons site or blog in return for a link.
Recently a friend remarked to me after looking into some of my sites and rankings that I had massive content and massive links to my sites. I had blogs, blog networks, commercial and academic sites and sites you really had to know what to look for to even know they belonged to me. What my friend wanted to know is how did I find the time to build this type of site and link network?
Now I would love to lie and say I work 12 hours a day, 7 days a week and that is why I have so much content. It would be a lie though, like most creative types I work in spurts and then back off and then do it again. Projects here and there, etc. The simple truth is all this content came from just making sure I always do at least one thing every day.
On days when I have no real desire to do much, I pick a page and find somewhere to publish something somewhere with a link to it for a targeted term. Over my 5 years online I have learned a link a day keeps poor rankings away.

I must agree. Even a simple thing like leaving one blog comment on a respectable blog can assist in showing the search engines that this is a live and decent site.
