I just read an article by SEM Research on how to get  more search engine traffic.  The author, Chris Sandberg did a good job of taking the often seemingly mystical art of search engine optimization and breaking it down into three basic steps which were,

  • Make a List of Targeted Keyword Phrases
  • Create an Optimized Page for Each Keyword Phrase on Your List
  • Obtain Quality Back links to Each of Your Pages

Does it sound like he is over simplifying?  Really he is not and breaking the whole process into three key phases does make it easier to comprehend for new marketers.  The article is well writen and he does expand on each of these points very well.

Of course the real art is in implementation of the steps, such as how, where and what to do to get quality back links.  How to write effective optimized copy and a heck of a lot more.  Still there is nothing wrong with a basic review of the fundamentals once in a while.

He has the basec idea. Like you said implementing this is key. If you do nothing nothing happens.

I think it is a very basec guideline. However if you do those three steps you will see results. Getting the inbound links to each tier 2, 3,4 pages is essential. Along with good on page optimization anyone can get these pages to rank.
