Yahoo Buys MyBlogLogs, what will Google do?
Acording to Search Engine Watch Yahoo just acquired MyblogLog which is all big news if you did not hear the rumors about it for the past few weeks. The service MyBlogLog, is pretty cool, you can be part of a blog's community and post your profile, etc if you are a fellow blogger or even just a reader of a blog. This is really nice and lets readers meet each other and be more then just anonymous comments.
For instance if you look just to the right in our sidebar you can see the members who recently visited out blog. You can also click there to join our community, if you like. I finally with this news added this to our blog here and it is indeed very cool. The service is very popular right now as well with MyBlogLogs easily topping the top 1000 Alexa sites just about any given day.
Yet my questions are different then the ones most people are asking right now. Most are asking if it was a good choice and was the service worth the investment. My questions are…
1. How is Yahoo going to improve it? I mean it is pretty cool but some things like actually joining a community could be far more intuitive expecially for a new person to the entire blogosphere.
2. Is Yahoo going to keep charging for the upgrade that is mostly for tracking thing. I mean Google Analytics is free so like could this become "Yahoo Stats for Blogs" or something like that. Anyone with a free analytics account is going to be hard pressed to buy the upgrade anyway. Why not carve out a niche because the demographic data is the real gold anyway?
3. Now that Yahoo has this service will they move quickly to develop it into more, improve it and market it better? Will they figure out ways to monitize it soon with advertising, create content ad opportunites for publishers, etc? Or will they just sit around and wait for Google to punch them in the face again?
You see Yahoo already has more traffic then anyone even Google. If all this does is bring them more traffic it was money poorly spent. Yet if they can monitize it, make it a niche stats program and sort of the MySpace of the Blogger world, well then it was a home run.
So what do you think about all this? Will it matter or will Yahoo just pitter patter around with yet another Web 2.0 buyout? What will Google do if anything to respond to this? Do you care, does anyone care, should anyone care? And dare I ask but is anyone at Microsoft even paying attention?
